1. Conferences

[discussion | review]

1b Innovate

  • StC Panel has been accepted
    • Rainer: some time after the StC panel would be good for a second meeting - we could use that to reflect on what we’ve learnt in the session
      • John: once we know when it is, lets try to have a get together afterwards
  • Hospitality suite - Tuesday night
    • Mik: Sean, reach out to Wesley about support
  • Friday meeting:
    • 2 hour meeting in the morning, lunch, afternoon can be used for smaller workgroup
    • Andreas, Rainer: lots of topics worth discussing in the afternoon, even with a smaller group
  • Rainer: Sean, please set up a separate page for StC activities at Innovate

1a Reflections on IBM Pulse

  • Andreas
    • I saw many presentations where OSLC was mentioned: in the keynotes, at the Open Cloud Summit, BPs reporting on their experiences with OSLC
    • there were almost no sessions where OSLC was in the title - it was fully integrated into the Tivoli business presentations
    • where I was involved
      • at the Open Cloud Summit, I presented EADS’ experiences with OSLC with an IBM BP (Orb Data)
        • had a good chat with Richard Soley (OMG CEO), maybe we should think about how to make use of their community
      • on the LiveStream! I presented with Dibbe Edwards, it was recorded and broadcast to the web
        • not much feedback though, because the audience wasn’t live
    • very impressed by the “executive” panel on OSLC
      • the BPs spoke very well about the benefits they’ve received from using OSLC
      • all the people speaking about OSLC, were very serious about their usage
      • really impressed with the MusalaSoft slide on how much money could be saved using OSLC, we should try to get the slide
      • the whole panel was in the same mood, they really got across the real value of OSLC
      • this is the style of presentation we need more of
        • John: hearing cost savings and opportunities are valuable to show
    • the experience showed me the need to have some level of interaction between technical WGs and the StC … I think this is what the UGs would provide
      • there are lots of motivated supporters out there, and we’re just not engaging them
  • Sean
    • agreed with what Andreas said
    • added that he spoke with several Tivoli BPs who had OSLC impls and they were interested in being more involved in the community …

1c OSLC Conference

[preview]

  • Sean: available on the CommsWG wiki
    • CommsWG hopes to have something to the StC for the April meeting
  • John: how can we leverage the interest that exists?
    • are we in a place where we can have significant attendance at the conference
    • as a standalone event, called a conference, 50-60 people probably understates the interest in OSLC … maybe calling it a workshop would be better
    • Andreas: let’s have that discussion at the CommsWG meeting
      • John: yes, we can provide this guidance to the StC

2. OSLC User Group Proposal

[review | vote]

  • Rainer: can we assume that everyone is aware of the content?
    • sounds like yes …
    • observation: there is a gap between outsiders and workgroup participants … IP and detailed specs is a big jump
      • starting with scenarios, for example, is much more approachable
      • no assumptions at the beginning about what the UGs do - they may not only provide scenarios to WGs
    • start with a few small steps at the beginning, get some groups started, monitor and improve
    • have had input from some StC members (Bola and Andreas), have also spoken to some potential users (KTH)
    • UGs should stay on open-services.net and not move to OASIS, we already have everything we need in place on our site
    • Sean, have you check with Lee about making the changes to the website to make UGs more visible and how to participate
      • Sean: yes, I have spoken to Lee, he can work on the changes once this is approved
    • we have a couple candidates:
      • KTH with some other partners with EU research projects, they’ll come to start when we approve it
        • would be around embedded systems
  • Andreas: from EADS PoV, I would love to have such a UG - I have many colleagues who could contribute
  • Bola: there would be a lot of interest from the EU projects
  • Rainer: the fact that the UGs could be cross cutting, covering scenarios that go across domains
  • Bola: starting from a free & open environment, we can generate a lot of ideas, some of which can be migrated up to the WGs when ready
  • Rainer: also, what do we lose?
  • John: what I hear is a desire to get this rolling so we can learn what demand is there
    • lets put a checkpoint 3 or 6 months down the road to figure out what additional things we should do
  • Rainer: there should be UG leader who we can interface with
    • this is very much in need with the infrastructure we already have in place
    • lets not worry about how to collect the scenarios into the WGs at this point, we can figure that out in the future
  • John: are their more thoughts that would diverge from the following summary:
    • we take the proposal as is, adopt it
    • whatever interest we have, we take them on, observe them, and correct course as needed
    • Rainer: something we can discuss at Innovate
      • John: yes, good idea, let’s put this on the Innovate agenda
  • Rainer: once we approve, lets publish and get this out
  • John: is there any input that says: “we’d like to further refined the proposal”, or “move at a slower pace”?
    • silence is affirmation, we’re affirmed
    • lets put the info out there now, and update the web once we have user groups
  • Sean: will turn the proposal into a wiki page on the StC wiki and write a blog post summarizing it and linking to the page for more details
  • Bola: to arrange a call with KTH
    • Rainer and Sean also to participate
  • Rainer: ALM-PLM Interoperability and Communications WG are possibilities for converting to UGs

3. Update on OASIS effort

[review]

Did not have time to cover, update provided by text on the related StC private page.

4. OData and RDF / OData and OSLC

[discussion]

Did not cover in depth.

  • Rainer indicated that the event that brought it to his mind has been postponed so we can discuss later.
  • John mentioned that IBM has spent some effort looking at the two technologies and can share some of the conclusions by email in Rainer is interested.

Summary

Agreements and Consensus in this meeting

  1. Friday F2F after Innovate 2013
    • use 2 hours in the morning, have lunch, leave open the possibility of smaller working groups progressing in the afternoon
  2. OSLC Conference
    • guidance to the Communications Workgroup: make sure to avoid understating the interest in OSLC; perhaps calling it a “workshop” would help with optics
  3. OSLC User Groups
    • proposal is accepted
    • evaluate at the June meeting
    • Bola to arrange a call with parties interested in creating the first UG

Action Items from this meeting

  1. Sean: set up an StC@Innovate page to keep all the StC activities in one place
  2. Sean: convert the OSLC UG proposal to a working wiki page
  3. Sean: write a blog calling attention to the new OSLC UGs, point to the wiki page for details
  4. Sean: propose that the Communications WG become a User Group on the Communications WG mailing list
