Hello Torge,
yes: this is the approach taken in the CM specification and we could do 
something similar.

My reaction to this approach is that it is more complex than we need to 
address the performance concern, within the context of the scenarios.  We 
don't need a general mechanism where a simple, but less flexible, 
mechanism will do. 

So in the future, we can explore adding query (as you are suggesting), or 
we could add more "canned" resources (though i concede that a 
proliferation of canned resources would be clumsy and would likely be 
avoided in favour of something like query).

How about simply adding the possibility of the client to list a set of 
attributes (meta data) which should be returned in addition to the URIs?

This is relatively simple to implement and could help to identify the RM 
which one really wants to retrieve. Or has all the information needed, 
for sorting maybe, already included.
